JSGH Summer Newsletter

Summer 2020 Issue: August 30, 2020

Message from the President

Dear JSGH Members and Friends,

I sincerely hope that this message finds you well, despite the trying times we find ourselves in. The Coronavirus pandemic has affected us all to some degree, and JSGH has been no exception. Although we haven’t been able to hold our regular social and cultural events like the Summer Festival and Nihongo Night, for many months, we are very much looking forward to finding new ways to engage with our members and the community.

This newsletter is a great example of one of the new things we are trying. We hope it will be a way to simplify communications with members and put all important JSGH news information in one place. There will be one every quarter, so be sure to look out for it! Also, since March, we have tried to grow our virtual presence by having several video-conference events, and photo contests on Facebook. While these were fun and engaging, I feel that they have been a poor substitute for our live events. Therefore, I’m very happy to announce our first in-person event since the start of pandemic: a simple picnic. It will be a little different than previous JSGH events due to the precautions we’ll be taking. But a simple picnic where we can enjoy the outdoors with each other, while maintaining social distancing of course, would be an excellent chance for all of us to reconnect.

To me, at least, it feels like it’s been a very long time. For details about the event, including the precautions that we’d like everyone to take, please see the invitation. We certainly hope to see you there.

Best Wishes,

Peter Watson JSGH President

JSGH News

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to cancel our annual Summer Festival in June. Instead, we had a virtual meetup with some of the members and guests. It was great to see some of the familiar faces online.

Also, we are constantly running fun photo contents on our Facebook page. During the August, we asked people to post photos of pets and wild animals they encountered near home. Please check out our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/JSofGH/) and participate in future contests.
